History

About Gritty’s Portland location:

Gritty’s Portland Brew Pub opened in 1988. It became Maine’s first brew pub since prohibition and a leader in the state’s craft brew revolution. Since then, locals and visitors from around the world have been enjoying fine, small-batch ales. Gritty’s brews on-premise and serves great pub fare in an old world pub atmosphere.
Gritty’s Portland Brew Pub is the perfect place to experience the ambiance of Portland’s Old Port.

Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio.

We’re open everyday and you’re always welcome. Gritty’s has become a Maine institution, garnering many awards for Best Bar, Best Brew Pub and Best Beer. Stop in, have a pint and see where the legend began.

Our Freeport Brewery not only serves our busy pub, but also supplies Gritty’s ales to many other establishments throughout Maine. We also produce our our flagship and seasonal ales in custom 22 oz bottles. About Gritty’s Auburn location:

In 2005 Gritty’s opened on the banks of the Androscoggin River in Lewiston/Auburn. Our Auburn brew pub is a warm and welcoming space in the classic Gritty style; long tavern tables, copper bar top and traditional brick work. The spacious deck features the best riverfront views in town, and our glass-enclosed, storefront brewery brings the working of a true pub brewery right to Main Street. And of course, our kitchen serves up the finest in traditional pub fare.

Gritty’s Auburn Brew Pub is a convenient stop on your way to four-season fun in Maine’s mountains and lake regions. We’re very proud to be a part of the revitalized waterfront in this historic community. Real Ale has returned to Central Maine!
