History

The Koelbus started as a vision of Eric Michaud to bring traditional Belgian lambic blending to Maine by sourcing spontaneous beer from multiple breweries throughout the state. However, instead of purchasing spontaneous beer already made by other breweries, the idea turned to bringing a koelschip to the breweries and then having Eric brew on their systems. A full size school bus seemed the best fit for this project. The bus was emptied of its seats, wrapped in multi-colored paisley print (because the DOT said a yellow school bus might entice children to get on board…) a custom 15bbl koelschip and holding tank was built, and the Koelbus was born.

Over the years, Eric collaborated with six other Maine breweries to brew this lambic-style spontaneous beer on their systems, transporting the beer to a warehouse in Scarborough, aging the beer from 1-3 years in ex-french wine 500 liter puncheons,, and finally creating a 3 year blend as well as various fruited variations.
